How To Do Line By Line Content Edit: A Checklist

Today we will be discussing how to do a line by line content edit that is applicable to non-fiction and fiction.

Part I: Introduction/Thesis

A good thesis (or introduction) should be elegant, parsimonious, clear, and relevant. It should make pull your reader in and make them want to keep reading because what you have to say is important and well written.

  1. Introduction gives general discussion that leads into your thesis.

  2. The thesis sets forth the main idea or argument of your paper.

  3. The thesis focuses or sets limits on your topic.

  4. The thesis  indicates the organization of your paper.

  5. The thesis is clear and concise.

Part II: Paragraph

A good paragraph should bolster the logic presented in the introduction.

  1. Has a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

  2. Contains only one main idea

  3. Supports the introductory idea .

  4. Uses transitions or the repetition of key words to indicate shifts in topic between paragraphs.

  5. Explains the significance or application of the ideas discussed.

  6. Is clear and concise

Part III: The Supporting Details or ‘Where the Devil Lives’ 

  1. Are logical and rational

  2. Support the topic sentence.

  3. Explains the how and the why.
